Sentencing of Howard Wynyard

7 February 2023

Statement from Dilworth Trust Board Chairman Aaron Snodgrass

Howard Wynyard was today sentenced to to six years and three months imprisonment in the Auckland High Court for two charges of indecent assault and nine charges of indecency during his time at Dilworth School.

Wynyard was a teacher at the School between 1977 and 1983 and a Senior Housemaster from 1980 to 1983.

While this is a step towards justice for Old Boy survivors, nothing we can do today can undo the past. The Trust Board is deeply saddened and disappointed this offending occured. Wynyard’s actions were a gross and complete breach of the trust placed in him by the Dilworth community.

We acknowledge the bravery and strength of Old Boy Survivors in laying the complaints with the Police that have led to these convictions. We continue to support the NZ Police in its investigations and prosecutions, as well as the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care.

Our response to historical abuse at our School includes ensuring that Old Boy survivors will have access to redress through our independent Redress Programme.

We have also commissioned an Independent Inquiry to understand how abuse like this could have occurred, including the School’s response at the time.

Any Old Boy who needs assistance can contact our free, confidential and independent Listening Service for access to professional counselling and psychological support. Please email [email protected] and an experienced psychologist will contact you.
