The Navigator Service — a survivor-led pilot programme to support the continued mental health and wellbeing of Dilworth survivors is launched.

What to expect on the day?

Overall atmosphere

The Dilworth Community Acknowledgement and Apology is a private event for former students and their families; former and current staff.

Attending the Dilworth Community Acknowledgement and Apology event – in person – and on the School campus – may be emotional and challenging for some attendees.  We will be providing support for these people.

We aim to provide a respectful atmosphere, free of disruption, where everyone from Dilworth’s community can feel safe and cared for.

Please note that, whilst we attempt to run to schedule, the timings are approximate.

Watching the Acknowledgement and Apology by livestream

Many individuals may prefer to view the Acknowledgement and Apology privately and in the comfort of their homes.  The livestream will be able to be viewed directly from https://dilworthresponse.org.nz/community-acknowledgement-and-apology/ - this link will work without having to install any new computer software.   A video and downloadable printed version will be made freely available shortly after the event itself.

Parking and Public Transportation

Please note, there will be no parking on the grounds of Dilworth School except for pre-organised disabled parking.

100 car parks are available at 80 Great South Road (across the street from Dilworth), and street parking nearby is available on Saturdays.

For public transportation options, please refer Auckland Transport’s Journey Planner.

Smoking, Drugs and Alcohol

The Dilworth Senior Campus is a drugs, alcohol and smoke free school.

For the safety of all persons attending, drugs, alcohol and people under the influence of drugs and alcohol will not be permitted on site.

Providing for attendees’ safety

The purpose of registration is to restrict attendance to members of the Dilworth community only, as it is a private event, and to enable the Senior Campus’ Health & Safety measures to be followed.

An ambulance and trained EMT from Hato Hone St Johns will be on site.

In the event of an emergency, Dilworth Senior Campus Emergency Protocols will be followed. In observance of fire evacuation management requirements, we ask attendees to leave large bags at home.

Privacy of attendees

The identities of all persons registered to attend are known to Dilworth Response and limited Dilworth staff only prior to the event. Upon arrival, staff and former students will greet and welcome all attendees, and may, therefore recognise former students and classmates. People, should they wish, may identify themselves further by writing their name on a sticker provided at the entrance marquee.

The livestream will focus only on the speaker giving the Acknowledgement and Apology -the camera angles will be over the heads of seated attendees so as not to capture their images.

To further protect the privacy of attendees, photography of any sort will not be permitted at any time or in any of the Dilworth spaces.  This includes videos and drones.

Attending to attendees’ emotional wellbeing

For those attending in person, there will be a dedicated wellbeing lounge adjacent to the Dining/Assembly Hall (in staff room) where attendees can retreat for personal reflection or to ‘take a breather’.  Professionally-trained and registered therapists will be available in this lounge to provide emotional support should it be requested.

For survivors or any other member of the community who may wish to attend the Acknowledgement and Apology in person but find themselves unable or unwilling to enter the Dilworth Senior Campus, a nearby and private room at the Remuera Club at 27 Ohinerau Street, Remuera  has been secured see map and private entrance information and a live feed of the proceedings at the Campus will be screened.  A professionally-trained therapist will be available at this location.

Learning about the changes to Dilworth School

Following the Acknowledgement and Apology and the pause for reflection immediately following, some attendees may wish to leave the School Campus and are welcome to do so at any time.  For those who are interested, Dilworth’s current Headmaster, Dan Reddiex, will speak briefly about many of the changes at Dilworth such as culture, safeguarding, boarding, policies, for those interested.  This will be livestreamed and later uploaded to the website, along with the Acknowledgement and Apology.

At the informal reception, attendees are encouraged to converse directly with Trustees and key members of staff with specialist roles such as boarding, pastoral care, Health & Safety, Māori students.  School leaders look forward to continuing this informal information sharing on small group tours through the campus for those that are interested.

Will there be opportunity to speak with the Dilworth Trust Board?

Yes. The Trustees encourage discussion with all members of Dilworth’s community and will participate in an open forum with those interested. Please note this will not be livestreamed or filmed.

Service of Reconciliation

Rev Greg Worboys, the current chaplain of Dilworth School, will lead a service of reconciliation for any member of the Dilworth community who wishes to attend.

This will be held at 4:30pm at St Marks Anglican Church at 95 Remuera Road which is where James and Isabella Dilworth are buried.

Please be aware that parking areas at St Marks are likely to be full on 1 March, so plan well ahead for walking or alternative transportation options.
